Job Title: Shelter Medicine Director/ Chief Veterinarian

Overview:We are seeking a passionate and experienced Chief Veterinarian / Medical Director to oversee the medical operations. You will play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of the animals in our care. You will lead a team of veterinary professionals and collaborate with other departments to provide high-quality medical care, implement health protocols, and promote animal welfare.
Responsibilities: Veterinary Care- Excellent diagnostic abilities, preventing illnesses, injuries, and diseases in animals, and proficiency in developing treatment plans for a variety of medical conditions.
- Experience in shelter medicine and small animal surgery, including spaying, neutering, soft tissue procedures, orthopedic surgeries, etc.
- Strong clinical skills and knowledge across a range of veterinary specialties, including surgery, anesthesia, dentistry, and preventive care.
- Develop and oversee medical protocols for intake, quarantine, and care of sick or injured animals to ensure high standards of care for all shelter animals.
- Developing and executing goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for medical personnel.
- Provide guidance and support to pet parents or caregivers on the proper care and management of released pets.
- Conduct post-release follow-ups to monitor the welfare of released animals and ensure they remain healthy and safe.
- Implement and oversee health management protocols for all animals in the shelter, including vaccination schedules, parasite control, and disease prevention measures.
- Collaborating with the management regarding euthanasia decisions for animals suffering from serious illness or severe injury.
- Coordinating with medical staff or subordinates to ensure completion of medical tasks on a daily basis.
- Monitoring, maintaining, and ensuring quality control of drugs used within the shelter and in the field.
- Oversee maintenance of clean and safe environment, including proper sterilization of kennels, wards, equipment and adherence to infection control protocols.
- Oversee maintenance of medical machinery, equipment, and devices to meet standards.
- Performing other related duties as required to support the operation of the animal shelter and the welfare of its residents.
Team Leadership and Development- Lead and manage a team of veterinary technicians, assistants, and support staff.
- Provide mentorship, training, and guidance to staff on medical procedures, protocols, and best practices.
- Tasked with leveraging expertise to aid in the recruitment process, including assessing candidate qualifications, conducting interviews, and providing input on hiring decisions to build a skilled and cohesive veterinary team.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that prioritizes animal welfare and professionalism.
- Schedule the medical team in all areas of the organization (hospital, sanctuary, sterilization, street treatment, etc.)
Collaboration and Communication- Collaborate with shelter management, animal care, and other relevant teams to develop and implement comprehensive health and wellness programs for shelter animals.
- Communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and external partners to coordinate medical care, share updates on animal health status, and address any medical concerns or emergencies.
- Represent the shelter in professional veterinary and animal welfare communities, participate in relevant conferences, and stay informed about industry trends and best practices.
- Training staff in administering first aid, vaccinations, and other paramedical duties.
Compliance and Recordkeeping- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations (Animal Welfare Board of India, state and municipal animal health laws), standards of care, and veterinary medical ethics in all aspects of shelter operations and animal care.
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for all shelter animals, including examination findings, diagnoses, treatments, surgeries, vaccinations and follow-up care.
- Oversee inventory management of medical supplies, medications, and equipment, and ensure proper storage and usage.
Knowledge of:- Proficiency in computer skills, including word processing, email, and presentation software.
- Familiarity with typical office protocols, methods, and equipment.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and adherence to safe working procedures.
- Competency in mathematical operations, including proportion calculation, percentage determination, volume measurement, ratio assessment, and fraction computation.
- Skill in maintaining precise record-keeping.
Qualifications:- DVM or equivalent degree.
- Minimum 5 years of clinical experience, including leadership roles.
- Experience in shelter medicine or nonprofit settings is highly desirable.
- Strong communication skills and cultural adaptability.
- Willingness to relocate to India.
