Job Description

Job Purpose

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Research Technician to support advanced histopathological workflows. The role requires expertise in microtomy (routine and complex), H&E staining, slide digitisation, construction of tissue microarrays (TMAs), and nucleic acid extraction from FFPE samples (sections or particulate material), followed by accurate DNA quantification.

The successful candidate will play a key role in translational research projects within the Glasgow Tissue Research Facility (GTRF) at the QEUH, taking responsibility for the planning, design, delivery, and safe operation of specialist technical equipment to optimise research output.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Using recognised technical expertise, support research colleagues in histology, digital pathology, TMA construction, and project delivery by utilising advanced scientific and technical skills to handle, process, analyse, and interpret human tissue samples.
  • Undertake specialist technical aspects of the GTRF service. Liaise with scientific and clinical service users to define service requirements, and plan and execute service deliverables in accordance with GCLP standards, ensuring compliance, quality, and timely delivery of service requests.
  • Using detailed specialist knowledge, advise service users in all technical aspects of the research service. Where required, undertake supervision of post-graduate students and junior staff to ensure learning outcomes are optimised.
  • Create, implement, and regularly review Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring compliance with GCLP guidelines, University policy, and best practice. Support Quality Lead with the implementation of a quality management system to GCLP guidelines, including document review, audit preparation and continuous quality improvement.
  • Keep up to date with developments in relevant technical areas and within the broader discipline to ensure contribution to service delivery is optimised. Utilise specialist knowledge to contribute to the effective planning and delivery of services provided by the GTRF.
  • Document service delivery outcomes in accordance with GCLP guidelines, including the receipt, storage, and analysis of samples, ensuring compliance with regulatory and quality standards. Maintain accurate and precise laboratory records and databases, ensuring traceability and compliance. Prepare project plans and final project reports to document service delivery and support compliance with GCLP guidelines.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical problems, including issues with the design and operation of technical resources, such as TMA projects and/or complex histology projects.
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day management of and compliance with relevant Health and Safety. Maintain all necessary records in accordance with set requirements, keep up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to the services delivered by the GTRF, and advise and train group members as appropriate. Report any potential issues to the Head of GTRF or relevant internal or external bodies timeously.
  • Work collaboratively with others, including within the School of Cancer Sciences and the CRUK Scotland Institute and where relevant with external contacts, to enhance service delivery and support the broader strategic aims of the University, including the Technician Commitment key themes, https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/staff/technicians/ Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by Head of the GTRF.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, And Experience

Knowledge / Qualifications

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post, having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role. OR: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 [Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4] or equivalent, (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar role.

Skills

Essential

C1 Significant breadth or depth of specialist technical knowledge and recognised as an expert in the specialist technical skills aligned to the work carried out within the GTRF

C2 Well-developed analytical and problem-solving capability, including a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail when dealing with complex and/or high-volume datasets.

C3 Proven interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to understand, conceptualise, and interpret complex technical requirements of a research group and adapt own style to meet the needs of others

C4 Excellent interpersonal skills, including teamwork and a collegiate approach. With the ability to collaborate with multiple internal and external stakeholders for effective project management.

C5 Ability to plan and prioritise a technical service to meet long term strategic objectives, whilst delivering a day to day service.

C6 Significant relevant work experience within a similar research/teaching services environment, including evidence of previous outputs and professional development.

C7 Experience in contributing to the development of a research/teaching services strategy, planning resource allocation, and achieving high-quality research/teaching outputs.

C8 Experience of operating independently in progressing and delivering research/teaching goals within set timescales.

C9 Significant IT skills, including proficient user of relevant specialist or bespoke software packages.

Desirable

D1 Demonstrable knowledge of relevant legislative requirements applicable to the role, including compliance with governance, safety, and quality standards

D2 Experience in assisting or independently constructing tissue microarrays for high-throughput research (manual or semi-automated)

Experience

Essential

E1 Experience in routine and advanced microtomy, skilled in producing clean, uniform sections, including small biopsies, fatty specimens, bone, and delicate or fragile samples (e.g., lymph nodes).

E2 Sectioning for molecular analysis using sterile, RNAse/DNAse-free techniques.

E3 Proven ability to manage and organise bulk slide production and labelling, maintaining accuracy and sample integrity throughout large-scale studies.

E4 Experience in supervision and training of staff and/or students.

E5 Significant relevant work experience within a similar environment, including evidence of previous outputs and professional development.

E6 Experience of operating independently in progressing and delivering research goals within set timescales

Desirable

F1 Experience in DNA/RNA extraction would be advantageous, particularly from particulate FFPE samples.

F2 Experience in digitising H&E, IHC, IF, and special-stained slides, ensuring optimal scan quality.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum.

This post is full time and fixed term until 30th September 2026.
