Job Description:
Don't just keep the plant running. Engineer what comes next! Some engineers spend their careers maintaining equipment. Others redesign systems, improve reliability and deliver projects that transform an entire manufacturing operation.

If you're the second kind, we'd love to meet you.

AKD is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead reliability improvements, mechanical engineering projects and capital initiatives at our Oberon manufacturing site. This is an opportunity to influence the future of one of Australia's largest integrated timber manufacturers while working alongside an experienced team that values practical thinking, innovation and continuous improvement.

Build More Than Machinery. Build Your Legacy.

At AKD, you'll have the opportunity to leave your mark on a manufacturing operation that continues to invest in its people, technology and future.

Working closely with production, maintenance and our national engineering team, you'll identify opportunities to improve reliability, optimise plant performance and deliver engineering solutions that create lasting value.
Whether you're developing new mechanical designs, leading equipment upgrades or delivering capital projects from concept through to commissioning, you'll see your ideas become reality.
This role is responsible for improving the reliability and performance of our manufacturing processes, supporting predictive maintenance programmes, leading mechanical engineering initiatives and ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with operational requirements. If you're motivated by solving complex engineering challenges and making a genuine impact, you'll fit right in.

About AKD

AKD is Australia's largest integrated timber manufacturer with a proud history of producing quality timber products for the Australian building industry. Our Oberon operation is more than a sawmill. It's a modern manufacturing facility where engineering plays a critical role in improving safety, reliability and production performance. We believe the best ideas often come from the people closest to the equipment. That's why we encourage innovation, support continuous improvement and give our engineers the opportunity to make meaningful contributions across the business.

What you'll be doing

As our Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll play a key role in improving plant reliability and engineering performance by:
  • Leading mechanical engineering, reliability improvement and capital projects.
  • Developing engineering drawings, specifications, scopes of work and technical documentation using CAD.
  • Improving equipment reliability and asset lifecycle performance across our manufacturing plant.
  • Supporting predictive maintenance and condition monitoring programmes.
  • Leading equipment upgrades, installations, alignments and commissioning activities.
  • Working with saws, conveyors, debarkers, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems and material handling equipment.
  • Identifying opportunities to reduce waste and improve manufacturing efficiency.
  • Working closely with production, maintenance teams, contractors and the national engineering team to deliver successful project outcomes.
  • Mentoring and supporting fellow engineers and maintenance team members.
  • Promoting engineering standards that support safe, efficient and reliable operations.

What you'll bring

You'll be someone who enjoys finding better ways of doing things and takes pride in seeing projects through from concept to completion.
Ideally you'll have:
  • A Mechanical Engineering qualification or equivalent
  • Experience within heavy manufacturing, timber processing, FMCG, mining, steel, pulp and paper or similar industrial environments.
  • Experience delivering reliability improvement or capital projects.
  • Strong knowledge of rotating equipment, conveyors, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and industrial mechanical equipment.
  • Experience preparing engineering drawings and technical documentation using CAD.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work across production, maintenance and leadership teams.
  • A practical approach and a passion for continuous improvement.

Why join AKD?

Because this is where engineering makes a real difference. Here, you'll have the opportunity to influence major manufacturing improvements rather than simply maintaining the status quo.
We offer:
  • A competitive salary package.
  • Fantastic relocation assistance and visa sponsorship.
  • Long-term career development with Australia's largest integrated timber manufacturer.
  • The opportunity to lead meaningful engineering and capital projects.
  • A collaborative engineering team where your ideas are genuinely valued.
  • The chance to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle of Oberon while remaining within easy reach of Sydney, Canberra and the Blue Mountains.

Ready to build your legacy? Some engineers maintain plants. Others transform them.

If you're looking for a role where your engineering expertise will shape the future of a major manufacturing operation, we'd love to hear from you.

If you're ready to build your legacy with AKD, apply today.
