Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we're building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

About us

We are expanding our Queenstown Lakes site and looking to have an onsite Consultant Radiologist.

Our Queenstown Lakes District has a permanent, rapidly growing, population of around 30,000 and a large visitor population. The Lakes District Hospital consists of twelve (12) General Medical beds, five Maternity beds, Emergency Department and a small out-patient department. We have an onsite Radiology unit, including a CT Scanner. Patients who require urgent specialist care are transferred by road or helicopter to Invercargill or Dunedin. We work closely with St Johns, the Otago Trust Rescue Helicopter and the Dunedin ICU Retrieval service to navigate patient transfers.

Our District Radiology Service offers a full range of imaging modalities based on a digital RIS/PACS systems. Across the district we offer MRI, Interventional, CT and ultrasound, however, we do not offer mammography services.

The vacancy in Queenstown requires a Radiologist with a general scope of skills, who can triage, protocol and report CT and Xray studies. As the sole Radiologist on-site, you would be expected to work closely with the ED department and all the Radiology staff. Working with a strong regional MDT team, you will be supported by the team in Southland and Dunedin. There would be scope for the successful person to regularly work in Southland to do fluoroscopy, US and MRI reporting/lists, and US/CT-guided interventional procedures.

You'll also have the opportunity to take a break from home as you join our closest geographical secondary Hospital, Southland, providing assistance with their 1:4 on-call roster, covering both Lakes and Southland districts. There are plenty of opportunities to join in regular meetings linking with one of the base hospitals, or participate in regional MDMs.

Part-time applicants and request for flexibility would be considered. However, at the present time, all colleagues (including part-time ones) undertake a full share of call duties which are compensated in addition to the base salary.

As a team who prides ourselves in the work we do, and the care provided to our patients, quality is at the centre of our service and there is an expectation that you will participate in quality initiatives as part of your role.

About you

As an outstanding team player, you'll have the energy to work independently and foster a positive experience with both patients and colleagues servicing the Lakes Queenstown community. In addition to enjoying a challenging and varied workload, you can look forward to a competitive pay rate and a culture where staff are included, valued and respected for their expertise.

You must be FRANZCR qualified (or equivalent) and hold, or be eligible for, vocational registration with Medical Council of NZ. If you are an international candidate, you can be considered for this role under the condition that you are eligible for vocational registration with the MCNZ. International applicants who are successful would need to be based in Southland initially in order to meet and complete a period of supervision as determined by Medical Council of New Zealand.
