Job Description:

About the roleThis opportunity is for a qualified cardiac and lung transplant surgeon to join the Transplant Program at The Prince Charles Hospital. Substantial involvement in heart and lung transplantation as well as the full spectrum of aortic surgery will be required. There will be participation in general cardiothoracic surgery with supervision and junior colleague mentoring as required. The successful candidate will be involved in on call for and undertake independent organ retrieval and implantation. Whilst a FRACS in cardiothoracic surgery is ideal, it is not mandatory. The applicant should possess a good understanding of organ support modalities including the XVIVO heart preservation machine. Involvement with DCD heart transplantation is critical. Similarly, the applicant would be expected to have experience with off pump pulmonary transplantation and the ex vivo lung perfusion systems.The Prince Charles Hospital performs over 1100 cardiac procedures a year with a large proportion of complex cardiac cases and thus offers an opportunity for the applicant to build on their knowledge base and gain further technical skills. It is the only provider of cardiac and lung transplantation for Queensland.The successful applicant will be expected to maintain and further develop contemporary specialist cardiothoracic skills in accordance with evidence based best practice combined with regular clinical and surgical audit review. They will be expected to participate in continuing education including teaching and teaching skills, and have an understanding of research, methods and techniques to enable active participation in research within the department.About youOur ideal candidate will be someone who can carry out the following key accountabilities in accordance with the Metro North Health's values:

  • Fulfil the responsibilities of this rolein accordance with Queensland Health's core values, as outlined above.
  • Take responsibility for overall management of patients in the preoperative and post-operative recovery units as well as the Ward providing information to consultants and those of other specialities; implement decisions on patient care which are taken by senior medical staff
  • Supervise the selection and prompt evaluation of appropriate investigations
  • Demonstrated communication skills, with particular reference to effective communication and courtesy when interacting with patients, relatives, other general public and health care colleagues
  • Maintain appropriate liaison with nursing staff and allied health personnel


Mandatory qualifications/professional registration/other requirements

  • Appointment to this position requires proof of specialist registration in Cardiothoracic Surgery (FRACS) with the Medical Board of Australia, or substantial progression towards this for local candidates in their final year of specialist training.  
  • For international applicants, comparable registration as a specialist with The General Medical Council (UK) or equivalent is required. International specialist qualifications will need to be considered comparable to an Australian Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery for the applicant to be considered for this role.    
  • Proof of maintenance of Continuing Professional Development and good standing as required by AHPRA for the maintenance of Specialist Registration.
  • Prior experience with transplantation is essential. 
  • Certified copies of relevant qualifications must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager prior to appointment.
