- Clinical duties:
All clinical sessions will be in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and cover the Southampton Oxford Retrieval Team (SORT), based at Southampton Children’s Hospital. Manage a mixed general PICU caseload and provide support for paediatric subspecialty services. - On-call and retrieval:
Spend time covering the regional retrieval service as the second on-call consultant; contribute to the Southampton Oxford Retrieval Team operations. - Specialist care:
Significant experience in paediatric cardiac intensive care, renal replacement therapies and advanced ventilatory support (including inhaled nitric oxide, high-frequency oscillation and extracorporeal life support). Ideally experience in a commissioned ECMO unit. - Clinical governance and education:
Participate in medical governance, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and continuing medical education to support professional development; act as an educational and clinical supervisor for resident doctors. - Administrative duties:
Undertake administrative duties related to patient care and running of the clinical department; shared secretarial support and office space are provided. - Service context:
The post is part of the Wessex paediatric major trauma centre with a dedicated paediatric ED; the successful applicant will join a Consultant Team for PICU in a service expanding to 11 whole-time-equivalent consultants.
Essential qualifications
- MRCPCH/FRCA or equivalent
- GMC registration with licence to practise
- Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
- Valid APLS Training
- Completion of all competencies in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine (minimum of 2 years) in a unit approved for training by the RCPCH GRID, with evidence of sign-off, AND either: six months of anaesthetic training OR on the GMC register with subspecialty PICM via CESR/Portfolio pathway OR existing substantive Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine
- Experience in congenital heart disease including cardiac ECMO
- Extensive experience in transporting critically ill children (land)
- Trauma experience
- Teaching and training experience
- Experience of cardiac intensive care
- Experience of general intensive care
- Experience of critical care transport
- Experience of critical care outreach/trauma team/cardiac arrest team member
Desirable qualifications
- Valid NLS Training
- Higher degree or laboratory-based research experience
- Education/teaching qualification
- Experience in managing respiratory ECMO patients
- Experience of air transport
