Job Description:
Thai Chef, Full-Time Permanent Location: Timaru, South Canterbury, New Zealand Pay: NZD $30.00 to $35.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience Hours: Minimum 40 hours per week, up to 48 hours as per agreement Positions available: 2 Sukhothai Restaurant & Bar is seeking two experienced Thai Chefs to join our long-established team in Timaru. We have proudly served authentic Thai cuisine to the South Canterbury community for more than 20 years and are expanding our kitchen team to maintain service standards, support increasing demand, and ensure continuity of high-quality operations. Key Responsibilities -Plan and update menus in consultation with kitchen staff and management -Prepare, freeze, preserve, and cook a wide range of Thai dishes with precision and consistency -Conduct food quality control and ensure dishes meet traditional Thai standards -Estimate food costs, portion sizes, and ingredient requirements -Recommend dish pricing and monitor food waste -Manage stock levels, inventory, and ingredient ordering -Assist in hiring kitchen staff and training them in Thai cooking techniques -Schedule rosters and lead by demonstrating correct preparation methods -Maintain a positive team environment and uphold food safety and hygiene standards -Inspect equipment, report maintenance issues, and ensure compliance -Perform any reasonable duties necessary to support the kitchen's smooth operation Employment Terms Position: Thai Chef Employment type: Full-time, permanent Hours: Minimum 40 hours per week (up to 48 as per agreement) Pay rate: NZD $30.00 to $35.00 per hour, depending on expertise Shifts: Rostered across weekdays, weekends, and public holidays Leave and entitlements: As per the NZ Holidays Act 2003 Required Qualifications and Experience -Minimum 5 years of verifiable experience as a Chef in a commercial kitchen, with a focus on Thai cuisine -Formal culinary qualification (certificate or diploma at NZQF Level 4 or equivalent) -Proven ability in traditional Thai cooking techniques, traditional recipes, flavour profiles, and presentation -Ability to work under pressure in a high-volume kitchen -Strong teamwork, communication, and time-management skills -Working proficiency in Thai language is required for this role, as day-to-day operations involve reading and interpreting traditional Thai recipes, training and supervising Thai-speaking kitchen staff, and maintaining the accuracy and authenticity of our cuisine Visa Support This employer is accredited with Immigration New Zealand under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) framework.
