The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is looking for a Senior Developer, Front Arena to join the Banking IT department and support the Bank’s activities.The role is based in Basel, Switzerland, however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities located anywhere in the world. Principal accountabilities:We are seeking a skilled and motivated developer to join the Trading Applications team within Banking IT. This role is primarily focused on designing, developing, and maintaining Front Arena and other treasury solutions used by the Treasury business units. The scope of systems we build is large, but the group behind them is small, which means each person can make a substantial impact. Your accountabilities will include:
Software Development:
  •  Design, develop, and implement customized solutions within the Front Arena (FIS) platform to meet business needs.
  • Develop and maintain interfaces and integrations between Front Arena and other systems or platforms.
  • Optimize and enhance existing Front Arena applications to improve performance, scalability, and functionality.

Operational Support:
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve system issues to ensure seamless operation of the Front Arena platform and other treasury solutions.
  • Respond to and resolve production issues promptly, minimising impact on business operations.
  • Participate in scheduled service windows and on-call rotations for evenings and weekends (appropriately remunerated).

Analysis & Solution Design:
  • Analyse and design business processes with traders, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into clear technical specifications.
  • Develop large and complex applications with little or no technical guidance, tools, and interfaces to address user needs.

Product Development & Testing:
  • Support product development to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of solutions aligned with business needs.
  • Develop and maintain automated tests and assist end users with testing activities.

Standards & Documentation:
  • Adhere to departmental processes, ensuring compliance with the Bank’s standards for system documentation, version control, change management, testing, and backup/recovery.
  • Undertake application-related administration of designated IT environments.

Collaboration & Communication:
  • Collaborate with business analysts, traders, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Represent the business area in Bank-wide IT projects and liaise with external suppliers, participating in negotiations and defining service terms.
  • Stay updated with the latest EMS/OMS solutions developments and industry trends to recommend best practices and innovative solutions.
  • Propose investments and ensure cost-effectiveness within the designated area of responsibility.

Qualifications, skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in a technical department within a financial institution or a software provider to financial institutions.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality solutions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Solid writing skills, including the ability to produce clear system and user documentation in English.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools for continuous integration and deployment.

Technical Expertise:
  • Proven experience as a developer working with Front Arena (FIS), including AEF (Arena Extension Framework) and ACM (Arena Class Model). Any FIS related certification is a plus (e.g. AEF Base or Advanced certification)
  • Strong programming skills in Python for Front Arena usage with AEL(Arena Extension Library),ACM and ADFL(Arena Dataflow Language). C# usage in AEF.
  • Experience with system integration, APIs, and messaging protocols (e.g., FIX).
  • Solid understanding of source control management, automated testing, and deployment processes.
  • Familiarity with Podman, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, event-driven architecture, and Kafka messaging is a plus.
  • Familiarity or experience with modern data architectures (e.g. ELT, dbt, data lake/lakehouse) is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of financial instruments and/or trading data management technologies, financial markets, trading workflows, and risk management principles.
