Job Description:
Role Title: Geospatial DevOps Software Engineer Role Location: Christchurch, New Zealand Hours: Full Time, 40 hours per week Salary Range: $93,600 - $104,000 per annum ($45 - $50 per hour) Role Purpose: Company Mission and Vision: Open Plan helps organisations collaborate and coordinate the delivery of large infrastructure projects. By combining purposeful collaboration with data-driven spatial systems, we aim to transform how infrastructure is delivered - always in service of the communities where we live and work. Our vision is to build technology and services that become foundational tools for planning and coordination across the built infrastructure sector, including in the context of disaster recovery and climate adaptation. We’re building a team of motivated, values-aligned people who want their work to have impact. Role Context and Strategic Fit: We are seeking a Geospatial DevOps Software Engineer to join our Christchurch-based team. In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain our cloud-based geospatial applications and data infrastructure. You will work closely with other engineers, analysts, and clients to ensure our solutions are robust, scalable, and meet the needs of our government and infrastructure customers. You’ll also provide support for DevOps, CI/CD, and infrastructure operations, gaining exposure to a full-stack technical environment. This role offers the opportunity to help shape the future of Open Plan’s technology capability. Open Plan has a flat hierarchy so you will work independently, but as part of a wider, collaborative team reporting directly to the CEO. Our technology supports the built-environment sector and so it’s very important that you have experience in software engineering within this context. A background with lifeline utilities, asset management, transport network operations or similar will be a distinct advantage. Key Responsibilities: You will lead data management across our platforms and provide backup support for backend and cloud operations. Your work will underpin the performance, reliability, and future scalability of our systems. You’ll collaborate closely with internal and external development teams to ensure alignment and knowledge flow. Key Responsibilities • Design, develop, and maintain geospatial data infrastructure and processing pipelines. • Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines for application deployment and data updates. • Integrate cloud-based services with geospatial platforms and tools. • Develop and maintain APIs and data services to support customer workflows. • Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to refine technical requirements. • Monitor, maintain, and optimise production systems for performance and reliability. • Ensure security, resilience, and scalability of all deployed solutions. Minimum Requirements (must be met to be considered) • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in computer science, software engineering, geospatial science, or a related discipline. • At least 5 years’ experience in software engineering, with a focus on DevOps practices. • Proven experience in geospatial software development and data processing. • Strong skills in cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, Azure). • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines. • Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, and related frameworks. • Experience with spatial databases (e.g., PostGIS) and GIS tools. • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently. Preferred Skills (not required but advantageous) • Experience working with government datasets and infrastructure planning tools. • Knowledge of containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes). • Familiarity with modern front-end development frameworks. • Understanding of infrastructure-as-code. Other Details • This position is based in Christchurch and is full-time at 40 hours per week. • The salary range for this role is NZD $93,600 - $104,000 per annum ($45 - $50 per hour) depending on skills and experience. • Applicants must be eligible to work in New Zealand or be able to obtain an Accredited Employer Work Visa. Applications Open: 15 August 2025 Applications Close: 31 August 2025 How to Apply: Please send your CV and a cover letter outlining your experience relevant to the minimum requirements to info@openplan.co.nz or via the website where this role is advertised.
