Job Description:
We are looking for a talented frontend developer to join the Chemical Biology team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The role is primarily to develop a series of web-based applications and interfaces for the Chemical Biology’s team resources (ChEMBL, SureChEMBL, UniChem). The role also involves the development, maintenance, and documentation of these tools, and supporting their usage within the EBI and externally. Additionally, it will entail some requirement gathering and use-case development.

The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry.

Your role

In your role as a Frontend Developer, you will be responsible for:
  • Developing and maintaining web-based applications and interfaces for the Chemical Biology team’s resources (ChEMBL, SureChEMBL, UniChem).
  • Documenting these applications to support internal and external users.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to gather requirements and define use cases.
  • Implementing best practices for software development, deployment, and automation.

You have
  • A degree in computer science, software development, or a related field
  • Several years’ professional experience involving front end development.
  • Track record of delivered projects involving web interfaces
  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript web frameworks (e.g., Vue.js).
  • Experience in Python programming.
  • Familiarity with search engines such as Elasticsearch.
  • Familiarity with SQL databases (e.g., Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL).
  • Experience in CI/CD workflows, particularly using GitLab.
  • Experience working with Linux operating systems.
  • Familiarity with containerisation technologies (Docker) and orchestration platforms (Kubernetes).

You may also have
  • Experience implementing data visualisations
  • An interest in life sciences is a plus.

Contract length: 3 years (grant based)

Salary: Grade 5 or Grade 6, depending on qualifications and experience, monthly salary of £3,229 or £3,612 after tax but excluding pension and insurance contributions. Plus generous benefits.
