Chef duties and responsibilitiesDepending on the seniority of their role, chefs perform a broad range of day-to-day duties. These include:
- preparing for service, which includes ensuring the kitchen is well stocked with the necessary ingredients, as well as cleaning, cutting and marinating food
- cooking and serving food, while coordinating with other kitchen staff and wait staff
- maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of the kitchen
- creating new dishes and planning menus
- ensuring that dishes meet high standards at all stages of preparation and presentation
- hiring and training junior chefs.
Chef skills and qualificationsTo excel in the role, a chef needs a range of prerequisite skills and qualifications, including:
- ability to work as part of a team and coordinate tasks with others
- strong communication skills
- attention to detail
- good organisational and planning skills
- ability to work efficiently while under time pressure
- creativity and an imaginative approach to food presentation.
