About Us: Schwope Brothers West Coast grows over 700 acres of bareroot trees and packaged trees in Banks, OR. We specialize in conifer, shade, ornamental, and fruit trees. This is a fast-paced, innovative organization that is revolutionizing the way trees are grown for increased performance and aesthetic appeal. Schwope Brothers West Coast is part of the DCA Outdoor family of brands, which is a vertically integrated organization focused on streamlining the production and distribution of landscape products nationwide. The production manager is responsible for executing the production plan through directing the lead production staff to deliver crops efficiently and to the highest quality. By leading the leaders of multiple areas, they are expected to manage their resources, equipment, facilities and inventory effectively. Key Responsibilities:
  • LMA: Lead, manage, and hold accountable the farm’s team to ensure the successful execution of operational plans and goals, with a strong focus on achieving the highest possible quality and yield of the crop. Create clarity for the team regarding seasonal production goals, ensuring they are aligned with achieving the highest possible quality and yield, and re-allocate resources as necessary to ensure successful attainment of these goals.
  • P&L/COGS Management: Responsible for managing the financial performance of the production farm, including controlling costs of goods sold (COGS) to optimize profitability. This involves monitoring budgets, analyzing expenses, and implementing strategies to improve efficiency and reduce waste while contributing to overall quality and yield.
  • Inventory Management: Oversees the tracking, control, and optimization of all plant and supply inventory to ensure accuracy, efficiency, quality, and plant health throughout the production process. This includes accurate record-keeping, managing stock levels to meet demand, and minimizing losses due to spoilage, obsolescence, or poor plant health, which directly impacts the quality and yield of the final product.
  • Resource Management: Manages the allocation and utilization of all resources, including labor, equipment, and materials, to ensure efficient and effective production and enable the team to consistently achieve the highest possible quality and yield. This involves scheduling, maintenance planning, and optimizing resource deployment to meet production targets.
  • Special Projects, Removing Barriers: Leads and executes specific initiatives or projects aimed at improving operations, efficiency, or addressing unique challenges to further enhance quality and yield. This also involves identifying and removing obstacles that hinder the team's ability to perform effectively.

Essential Job Duties:
  • Participate in weekly production meetings to review operational plans, production targets, and team performance. Communicate clear seasonal production goals, timelines, and progress, using the production plan as the primary framework for setting priorities and making adjustments
  • Conduct bi-weekly one-on-one performance check-ins with direct reports, aligning individual performance with the overall production plan and addressing performance issues
  • Partner and collaborate effectively with internal departments (e.g., Sales, Logistics, Finance other Production Managers) and external stakeholders (e.g., suppliers, customers) to ensure seamless operations and support the achievement of production goals
  • Manage site financial performance by tracking key financial metrics, reporting on performance against budget monthly, and making necessary purchasing decisions and budget adjustments to support the execution of the production plan
  • Participate in budget planning sessions, providing accurate projections for production costs and resource needs based on the anticipated production plan
  • Oversee and maintain accurate and up-to-date inventory records in the designated system, ensuring the necessary data is available for effective production planning and resource allocation. Prioritize and lead accuracy in production inventory and crop grading
  • Monitor plant health through regular checks and adjust production practices and resource allocation based on assessments to ensure the production plan remains achievable
  • Effectively manage the allocation and utilization of resources, including labor, equipment, and materials, by coordinating workflow, tracking productivity, monitoring and managing the efficient use of key resources like water and fertilizer, tracking consumption against targets, and re-allocating resources as necessary to achieve seasonal production goals
  • Utilize the work order system to identify and proactively manage work on the farm, ensuring tasks are aligned with and support the overall production plan
  • Manage H2A Visa Program compliance by proactively determining labor needs for the following year based on the production plan, ensuring accurate communication to facilitate timely arrival of the workforce, and overseeing their smooth transition, integration into farm operations, and adherence to all program regulations and requirements
  • Perform physical tasks and provide hands-on support as needed to ensure operational efficiency and meet production demands, demonstrating a willingness to contribute directly to farm activities
  • Maintain operational integrity across all systems and software, actively troubleshooting and implementing solutions to minimize downtime, even when facing complex or non-obvious challenges

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Required: Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in tree production, demonstrating a strong understanding of horticultural practices, plant health, and inventory management
  • Required: Minimum of 3-5 years of successful leadership and team management experience, with a proven ability to manage and hold teams accountable for operational goals
  • Preferred: Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, or a related field
  • Preferred: Possession of a valid Pesticide Applicator's License
