We are a global research centre with a network of world-leading researchers, country teams across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East, and a set of global policy initiatives. Based at London School of Economics (LSE) and in partnership with the University of Oxford, we are majority funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) with support from other global funders. We focus on four themes: state effectiveness; firms, trade, and productivity; cities; and energy and environment. Cities that Work (CtW) is an IGC initiative that co-generates policy relevant research on urban economics and translates that research into clear urban policy guidance and support for policymakers. Over the past three years, CtW has undertaken significant impact-driven collaborations with several policymakers, including Mayors and Ministers, to support evidence-based urban policy reforms. The initiative is driven by the priorities of cities, with close feedback and direction from researchers, policymakers, and practitioners. Key responsibilities include generating research projects, conducting policy analyses, organising and participating in events and training workshops, and engaging with partner governments and our network of researchers. The essential skills we are looking for include: a demonstrated understanding and experience of economic research and policy issues relating to cities; a proven track record of working with policymakers on urban issues in low & middle-income countries (LMICs); a Master’s degree in economics, public policy, or related technical disciplines by date of application; demonstrated ability to construct clear and concise arguments which translate research into policy recommendations; the willingness to travel to Africa, Asia and Middle East, and engage with country teams and stakeholders in these regions; demonstrated ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects a proven track record of working independently and taking initiative This is a full-time open-ended appointment to 30 September 2026, with any extension subject to funding.
