Job Description:
The opportunity We are seeking an experienced (9+ years) lawyer specialising in TMT/IT law to join our market-leading TMT team based in Auckland, New Zealand. The team is led by partners Allan Yeoman and Keri Johansson and works with a broad spectrum of clients across the country and the broader Asia-Pacific region, advising on technology procurement, privacy, data and cyber issues, TMT-sector transactions and regulatory advice. You will be working with leading experts in the field.

Our TMT team Our team acts for a range of blue-chip clients in the private and public sectors, various tech start-ups, private equity and venture capital firms, broadcasting and media entities, and healthtech and healthcare sector agencies. You will be part of a team providing advice on the full spectrum of TMT projects and regulatory advice (acting for both customers and suppliers), covering technology procurement and development projects, commercial contracting, content development and licensing, digital infrastructure, privacy and cyber, gaming, media and entertainment issues, marketing campaigns, and TV and film content production and acquisition. Our TMT team works closely with Buddle Findlay’s corporate M&A team on tech and telco sector transactions, providing specialist knowledge and support when needed. There is a steady diet of varied work that is engaging, complex, and challenging.

As a Senior Associate in the team, you will be confident leading a file and taking an active client-facing role, with support from partners and junior team members as needed. You will be given opportunities to contribute to client relationships, help with business development initiatives and build your own profile.

What is important to us We look for people who bring a different perspective, who are ambitious, curious and innovative. Our ideal candidate would:
  • have 9+ years' TMT focused legal experience gained within a law firm or in-house environment
  • be comfortable advising on privacy, data protection and cyber issues
  • be adept at contract drafting and negotiation
  • ideally have a good working knowledge of copyright, the Fair Trading Act and other relevant regulatory areas
  • enjoy working collaboratively within the team, firm, and externally
  • have an interest in business development, and be keen to build your own name and profile in the industry.

Overseas applicants are required to be admitted as a Solicitor in New Zealand, Australia, the UK or a similar common law jurisdiction, and must be willing and able to relocate to New Zealand.
