Bucknell University's Department of Music invites applications for a year-long Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning August 2026. We seek candidates who specialize in African, African-American, and/or African-diasporic musical culture(s), and/or music and social justice. The successful candidate will teach three courses each semester in African, African-American, and/or African-diasporic music; critical intersections of music with race and social justice; jazz, rock, and/or hip-hop; cross-cultural perspectives in music; and/or other related areas. By the start date of the position, candidates are expected to have a doctorate or be ABD in Ethnomusicology, Africana/African-American/Black Studies, Jazz Studies, Musicology, or another related field.

It is the seat of Union County, which has about 44,000 residents. In addition to the many cultural, recreational, and educational opportunities and events offered by the University and within the Lewisburg community, the surrounding region offers strong schools and medical facilities, and an affordable cost of living. Bucknell is about three hours from Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.

This role is eligible for visa sponsorship in accordance with University policy. At this time, the University is only able to provide H-1B visa sponsorship for candidates currently residing in the U.S. with a valid, transferable visa status (e.g. H-1B, F-1, J-1). Bucknell is not currently in a position to initiate new H-1B petitions for candidates residing abroad
