Job Description:
 About the Team The Applications team within ITS , operates a substantial platform based on circa 100 Kubernetes clusters, combining a large VMWare estate on premises with a growing presence in public cloud. The Hybrid Cloud Manager will work within the Applications Team in ITS, leading a sub-team of 3 DevOps engineers focused on modernising the way our developers and bioinformaticians deploy applications. This involves building strong internal relationships, both within the IT department and more widely with the teams managing public-facing bioinformatics services. This role will also oversee the administration of our public cloud estate, where EMBL-EBI runs making sure FinOps processes are in place, enabling cost tracking, forecasting and governance across multi-cloud environments. The Hybrid Cloud Manager is an essential figure in ensuring efficient balance of on premises and cloud resources, and in addition, a key actor in the delivery of one of the key missions of EMBL: Training. You will also work in partnership with the Training team in EMBL-EBI to uphold the quality of course delivery, and drive a consistent high standard to contribute to excellent learning experience. In this role you will: Management and leadership
  • Work closely with engineering to deliver strategic initiatives identified by the organisation
  • Lead a team of three DevOps engineers, providing technical guidance and mentorship
  • Actively contribute to the Applications team’s roadmap design


Stakeholder Engagement
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders across EMBL-EBI
  • Ensure a good understanding of the organisational activities to gather and translate requirements and manage expectations


Technical Excellence
  • Solutions Architecture - foster a mindset to develop reusable architecture blueprints
  • Platform engineering and automation - plan, design and evolve self-service, scalable platforms for our users
  • FinOps - Driving a cost-awareness culture empowering teams to optimise usage


Project management
  • Track project performance ensuring deadlines are met and outcomes are achieved
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams and oversee delivery 

You have (Requirements) 
  • 5+ years’ IT experience in cloud computing across virtualised environments (VMs, containers, Kubernetes, serverless) on platforms like AWS, GCP, or OpenStack
  • Proven experience in Agile/Scrum delivery environments
  • Strong knowledge of on-prem infrastructure (servers, storage, networking)
  • Experience supporting demanding users (e.g. research/scientific communities)
  • Solid Linux expertise (preferably RHEL)
  • Relevant cloud certifications (e.g. solutions architecture)
  • Experience modernising applications, including multi-region deployments
  • Skilled in automated, repeatable Linux/cloud service deployments for scientific needs
  • Hands-on delivery of public cloud training
  • Familiarity with FinOps practices and cost optimisation
  • Able to prioritise tasks, lead technical teams, and represent team work in meetings
  • Prior experience managing small technical teams

You might also have (Desirable)
  • Experience with ITSM tools (e.g. ServiceNow)
  • TOGAF certified or equivalent experience in enterprise architecture

  • Background in scientific/research environments (e.g. computational, physics, biology)
  • Experience in distributed project collaborations (e.g. EC-funded projects)
  • Involvement in scientific publications or authorship

Other helpful information  Hybrid Working: At EMBL-EBI we are pleased to offer hybrid working options for all our employees. A dedicated desk will be available everyday, but our team work two days which are Tuesday’s & Wednesday’s on site and three from home.
