St. George Hospital is one of the major
Level 1 Trauma services in NSW. The Department of Trauma Surgery provides state-of-the-art emergency trauma and critical care for injured patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Almost 1800 trauma patients are admitted annually, with over 350 of these patients classed as major trauma. Most of these patients sustain multisystem injuries, which are admitted under a dedicated Trauma Admitting Bed Card. The Trauma Team co-ordinates the management of these patients with other specialty services and maintains care through until discharge or transfer for rehabilitation. The Trauma Service undertakes surgical repair of complex chest wall injuries and is one of the busiest rib fixation services in NSW and is in the process of becoming a Collaborative Centre with the Chest Wall Injury Society. The Trauma Service operates within a modern purpose-built facility, which includes:
- Onsite integrated helipad capable of receiving helicopters
- Three major trauma resuscitation / theatre bays with imaging
- A specialised Trauma ward
- 36 funded (52 physical) state of the art ICU beds in four PODs with designated trauma beds with full bedside monitoring
- A state-of-the-art hybrid theatre incorporating a fully functional CT scanner, angiography suite and operating theatre, a first in a major Australian Trauma Centre. Code Crimson patients – (exsanguinating patients transferred by the Retrieval Service), are transferred directly to OR1, bypassing ED where required.
