Job Description
The future of semiconductor technology depends on breakthrough materials that can overcome the scaling limits of conventional silicon devices. As a PhD candidate, you will pioneer the development of high-quality 2D semiconductors for advanced CMOS applications, directly contributing to the next generation of computing technology.
You will work on
CVD and MOCVD growth of 2D materials (e.g. transition metal dichalcogenides, metal oxylselenides), focusing on achieving both n-type and p-type semiconductors with the exceptional quality required for sub-1 nm node technology. Your research will span the entire innovation chain from materials synthesis and comprehensive characterization to device integration. You will fabricate and test cutting-edge device architectures, including
2D Complementary FETs (CFETs), memory devices, and sensors, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in semiconductor scaling.
This position is embedded in the
Plasma & Materials Processing (PMP) group at TU/e under the supervision of
Dr. Ye Wang, where you will work in state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities and contribute to collaborative projects with leading industrial partners. You will have access to advanced characterization tools and be part of an interdisciplinary team bridging materials science, electrical engineering, and nanotechnology.
Your work will directly address one of the semiconductor industry's most critical challenges, developing materials and device architectures that enable continued performance improvements as conventional scaling approaches its physical limits. This research is essential for future computing, artificial intelligence, and sensor technologies that will shape our digital society.
The Department of Applied Physics and Science Education is a research-driven department housing high-quality educational programs, all featuring strong connections between research and education. Job Requirements
- A master's degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Strong background in 2D materials synthesis (CVD/MOCVD experience is advantageous) and/or semiconductor device physics.
- Experience with materials characterization techniques (e.g., Raman, XPS, AFM, SEM/TEM) and cleanroom fabrication.
- A research-oriented attitude with problem-solving skills and creativity.
- Ability to work in an international team and interested in collaborating with industrial partners.
- Motivated to develop your teaching skills and coach students.
- Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level).

- Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. You will spend a minimum of 10% of your four-year employment on teaching tasks, with a maximum of 15% per year of your employment.
- Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. € 3,059 - max. € 3,881).
- A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
