About us The UCL Institute of Archaeology is recognised as one of the leading academic departments of Archaeology and Heritage in the world. It is the largest department within its field in the UK. It offers a uniquely stimulating environment with more than 60 staff pursuing high-quality research across five continents. We are at the forefront of global archaeology, conservation and heritage studies and have well-equipped laboratory facilities for archaeological science. Quantitative archaeology and the study of European prehistory represent two dynamic fields of research and teaching at the UCL Institute of Archaeology that often overlap in interesting ways. We have a lively research community of academic staff, postdocs and PhD students working on quantitative, spatial and computational topics, as well as working on regional evidence from later prehistoric Europe (i.e. Neolithic, Bronze Age and/or Iron Age, anywhere from Britain to the Baltic to the Mediterranean). Visit www.ucl.ac.uk/archaeology to find out more.
About the role We are seeking to appoint a full-time Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Quantitative Archaeology and Later European Prehistory to teach core and option modules to undergraduate and postgraduate students, to act as personal tutor to undergraduate students, to build the profile of both quantitative and European prehistoric archaeology at the UCL Institute of Archaeology, and to contribute more generally to teaching and administration as required. This is a full-time post at 36.5 hours per week including all course preparation, teaching, support, marking and other duties. The post is funded from 1 October 2025 until 30 September 2027 in the first instance, providing cover for Professor Andrew Bevan for the period when he will be on research leave as a Leverhulme Trust Fellow.
About you The successful candidate will have a PhD in archaeology or related field, with a specific research focus that includes significant engagement with quantitative, spatial and/or computational methods and which has a regular focus on some aspect of the European prehistoric archaeological record. Candidates must be able to deliver undergraduate modules and Masters modules in quantitative archaeological methods in the regional prehistoric archaeology of Europe in line with their own expertise, as well as to deliver and contribute to other core archaeology modules at undergraduate and Masters level. Personal tutoring and academic support for undergraduate students is an important part of the role. Informal enquiries about the role may be sent to Professor Kevin MacDonald at ioa-director@ucl.ac.uk Queries regarding the application process should be sent to Louisa Goldsmith (HR Administrator) at l.goldsmith@ucl.ac.uk
