Job Description:
Job Summary We are seeking a Consultant in Acute Medicine to provide senior cover for the Emergency Admission Unit and Same Day Emergency Care Unit on a temporary basis for an initial 12‑month period. The role is based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.Responsibilities
  • Deliver senior clinical cover for the Acute Medicine service, participating in the GIM on‑call rota.
  • Attend to patients on the Acute Medicine ward, ensuring continuity of care and compliance with Trust policies.
  • Supervise and train junior medical staff, including teaching medical students and other healthcare professionals.
  • Develop and implement service improvement initiatives, including audit and quality projects.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and support administrative duties as required.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teamwork and leadership activities within the Trust.

Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration, with licence to practise, or eligible for full GMC registration.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Acute Internal Medicine, or within 6 months of completion of training.
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification.
  • Formal teaching qualification or instructor status for relevant courses (e.g., ALS, ATLS) – desirable.

Experience
  • Experience in Acute Medicine clinical management, including Same Day Emergency Care.
  • Experience in clinical audit and quality improvement.
  • Experience teaching and supervising junior colleagues and medical students.
  • Published research and conference presentations – desirable.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Knowledge of GMC Good Medical Practice and holistic patient care.
  • Organisational skills, including time management and delegation.
  • Effective communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Clinical leadership in Acute Medicine and Critical Care settings.
  • Proficiency in clinical IT systems.
