Respiratory Therapist (RT)Location: United StatesEmployment Type: Full-time and Part-time positions availableJob Overview:This role involves providing specialized respiratory care to primarily adult and geriatric individuals across various healthcare settings. The Respiratory Therapist will operate under physician orders and departmental protocols, performing comprehensive assessments, administering diverse therapies including mechanical ventilation, and educating individuals and their families. This position requires strong clinical expertise, adherence to care plans, diligent equipment maintenance, and active participation in interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes.Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform respiratory care procedures under general supervision and medical direction, exercising judgment within the physician's treatment plan and departmental policies.
  • Assess individuals' conditions, administer prescribed therapy and aerosolized medications, and meticulously record progress and response to therapy modalities, including any adverse reactions.
  • Provide in-service training to individuals, family members, and facility staff as needed.
  • Initiate, monitor, and maintain life support systems for individuals in skilled nursing facilities.
  • Perform airway care and maintenance.
  • Manage artificial ventilator status according to approved protocols and maintain/troubleshoot mechanical ventilators.
  • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures, including bag ventilation and closed chest massage.
  • Initiate, monitor, and document the performance of various respiratory care modalities.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of cardiopulmonary status using physical assessment, history taking, laboratory findings, radiological studies, and pulmonary function testing to formulate respiratory care plans.
  • Prior to treatment, verify physician's orders for completeness (diagnosis, ICD-10 code, therapy type/duration, medication type/dosage, FI02, and frequency).
  • Review the individual's chart for relevant history and precautions.
  • Observe and chart vital signs (pulse, respiration, breath sounds), general appearance, and document breathing exercises and teaching.
  • Administer proper technical respiratory care procedures, dispense correct medication dosages, and adjust devices for optimal therapy results, ensuring individual comfort and ease of operation.
  • Monitor individuals' respiratory rate, pattern, pulse, breath sounds, and reaction to medication during and after treatment, charting and communicating pertinent information to the nurse.
  • Inspect, test, disassemble, clean, and reassemble equipment as required; maintain adequate supply levels and dispose of equipment properly.
  • Assist in emergency cardio-pulmonary resuscitation as an integral part of the emergency team.
  • Initiate, administer, evaluate response to, and document all therapy modalities according to departmental procedure and physician orders, including intermittent positive pressure breathing, hand-held nebulizer, chest physical therapy, deep tracheal suctioning, incentive spirometry, and sputum induction.
  • Recognize and take corrective action for adverse reactions to therapy modalities.
  • Document all care services rendered as part of the medical record.
  • Accept and transcribe verbal orders related to respiratory care procedures.
  • Set up, maintain, and record log entries for all types of oxygen and respiratory supplies and equipment.
  • Instruct individuals and family members in the rationale and methodology of every respiratory procedure to facilitate cooperation, understanding, and treatment efficiency, working towards rehabilitation goals.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and conferences to plan and evaluate effective individual care.
  • Participate in quality assurance program data collection.
  • Ensure effective and efficient delivery of rehabilitation services, adherence to care plans and schedules, and timely documentation.
  • Participate in general equipment troubleshooting and specific tasks to optimize diagnostic equipment accuracy, including quality control and preventive maintenance/calibration.

Requirements:
  • Completion of an NBRC approved and accredited Respiratory Therapist program.
  • One year of clinical practice experience under medical direction.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Current State Licensure for a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
