Job Description:
Macalester College [Department of Religious Studies](https://www.macalester.edu/religious-studies/) is hiring an advanced candidate for a full-time, tenure track position in Religious Studies, specializing in the study of modern American Christianity, to begin Fall 2026. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Religious Studies, a strong record of published research in modern American Christianity, and at least seven (7) years of teaching experience in American Christianity and related fields. Candidates with a PhD in History may be considered if they meet other qualifications, including teaching experience in the described fields. Candidates should demonstrate broad interests in Religious Studies approaches to their studies, incorporating disciplinary methods and perspectives from, for instance, history, philosophy, anthropology, politics, and/or critical studies, in addition to theology. Candidates should also demonstrate experience in undergraduate education and broad, interdisciplinary interests in the humanities, fine arts, and/or social sciences.

The successful candidate will conduct research in a field that relates to the history, practice, and institutions of American Christianities, and will have a strong teaching record in a range of courses in Religious Studies covering Christian traditions, as well as disciplinary questions of method and theory. We especially encourage applications from scholars with research and teaching experience in the religious lives of minorities and people of color, as we hope to expand our department's curriculum in the area of American Religion and religious diversity in America. Candidates may negotiate a shortened timeline to tenure, depending on their level of experience. The successful hire can look forward to being named the Margaret W. Harmon Professor of Religious Studies.

Benefits

Based on internal equity and depending upon experience, the starting salary range for this position at the advanced Associate Professor level will be $105,000-108,000. For Full Professor candidates, the starting salary range will be $116,500-118,000. Salary would be higher for candidates with more experience at the Full Professor level.   • Experience and/or vision in teaching undergraduate students; include experience using inclusive pedagogy, active and innovative teaching strategies, and assessment of learning outcomes as applicable.
  • Contributions to the scholarly or creative field and research; highlight professional engagement in the field and community engagement in local and/or global contexts.
