Instrumentation & Monitoring Technician - Tauranga

Hands-on field role | Geotechnical & Environmental Monitoring

Cirro (part of Geotechnics) is looking for an Instrumentation & Monitoring Technician to install, commission, and maintain field-based monitoring systems across infrastructure, geotechnical, and environmental projects throughout New Zealand.

This is a practical, hands-on role working with instrumentation, sensors, data logging, and telemetry systems. Please note this is not a software or development-focused position.

You'll spend time both in the workshop and out on site, working with real-world monitoring equipment in construction, infrastructure, and remote environments. When systems need to be installed, configured, or fixed on site, you're the one making it happen.

If you enjoy working with instrumentation, electronics, and monitoring systems - and don't mind getting your boots muddy - this role will suit you well.

What you'll be doing
  • Installing, commissioning, and maintaining geotechnical and environmental monitoring systems
  • Assembling, wiring, configuring, and testing sensors, data loggers, power supplies, and telemetry equipment
  • Diagnosing and resolving electrical, power, communications, or equipment faults in the field
  • Carrying out inspections, calibration, servicing, and repairs to ensure reliable, high-quality data
  • Setting up and verifying monitoring equipment in Cirro's data platform
  • Working across construction sites, infrastructure projects, and remote locations
  • Providing practical input into instrumentation, power, and telemetry solutions
  • Owning safety, quality, and workmanship on site

No two days are the same - some days are workshop-based, some setting up devices on a computer, many are on site, with some travel required.

This role will suit if you…
  • Have hands-on experience with instrumentation, monitoring equipment, electrical, or automation systems
  • Are comfortable working outdoors and on active sites in varying conditions
  • Enjoy practical problem-solving and fault-finding in real-world environments
  • Take pride in doing installations properly and leaving systems working as they should
  • Prefer physical, field-based work over desk-only roles

What you'll bring
  • 2+ years' practical experience in instrumentation, monitoring, electrical, automation, IoT hardware, or a related technical field
  • Strong hands-on skills with tools, wiring, low-voltage electrical systems, and fault-finding
  • Experience or familiarity with sensors, data loggers, telemetry, or monitoring systems
  • Confidence working independently on site
  • Clear communication and a practical, solutions-focused mindset
  • Full NZ driver's licence and willingness to travel for field work
  • A strong safety-first attitude and commitment to Health & Safety

Please note this role is not aligned to candidates with primarily software, IT, or cloud-based experience.
