About the Role
Working closely with the General Counsel, Legal Counsel provides strategic and impactful advice on all matters with legal implications to the ONroute Group of Companies This professional works collaboratively with broader teams from Operations, Procurement, Finance and HR to develop and implement strategies that proactively identify and manage risks. The work has a strong corporate and commercial element, with major business partners including large franchise systems and the Province of Ontario. The work also provides exposure to the full range of legal matters that arise in a dynamic company with approximately 2000 employees and 35 million guests each year. As part of a small and collegial team, Legal Counsel will have opportunities to grow their practice in terms of sophistication and breadth, within a supportive environment.
Reports to: General Counsel
Responsibilities:- Negotiating and drafting commercial agreements to achieve desired outcomes while minimizing ONroute’s legal exposure.
- Interpreting existing agreements with franchisors, suppliers and the Province of Ontario, and providing ONroute with practical guidance in respect of the issues raised in connection with such agreements.
- Helping to ensure compliance with applicable legislative and regulatory requirements, including monitoring and assessing ongoing developments and their impact on ONroute’s business.
- Providing advice on a variety of issues that arise in ONroute’s business, including corporate and commercial law, franchise law, governance matters, employment law, IT/IP, financing, immigration and environmental issues. Involves partnering with and managing external counsel on specific matters.
- Management of actual or threatened litigation and guiding dispute resolution with external counsel.
- Handling of issues and escalations related to customers, franchisors and suppliers.
- Reviewing employment agreements prepared by the Human Resources team and providing advice in respect of employment-related issues arising from ONroute’s operations.
- Participating in the development of corporate policies, procedures, and programs.
Qualifications & Experience
- Current member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- 2-4 years of corporate/commercial law experience, ideally at a full-service law firm or within a mature and fast-paced inhouse setting.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize and resolve complex legal issues in a practical manner.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of multi-disciplinary team, including the ability to succinctly communicate legal issues to diverse audiences.
- Strategic thinking with ability to constructively manage difficult conversations and effectively resolve issues both internally and externally.
- Ability to effectively work on multiple matters in a dynamic environment – while understanding and meeting business priorities.
- Well-organized with close attention to detail.
- Excellent written and interpersonal skills.

Minimum Salary: $130,000
Maximum Salary Range: $154,000

Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to job duties, experience, and performance. The range(s) listed are just one component of ONroute’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include bonuses, benefits, and Paid Time Off
