Located in the heart of Berry, NSW, The Berry General Store is a well-loved café and restaurant serving honest, seasonal food made with quality local produce. Our menu spans all-day breakfast, fresh sandwiches, vibrant lunch dishes, and a busy weekend service, all paired with a strong sense of community and genuine hospitality. We're looking for an experienced Sous Chef who thrives in a fast-paced kitchen and enjoys leading by example. This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in consistency, organisation, and developing others while working alongside the Head Chef to drive a high-performing kitchen.
You'll be a key part of the leadership team, helping oversee day-to-day operations, maintaining high food standards and ensuring service runs smoothly. We're looking for someone who is calm under pressure, highly organised, and passionate about creating great food while building a positive kitchen culture. You should have previous experience as a Sous Chef or an experienced Senior Chef ready to step into a leadership role. Strong communication skills, excellent time management, and a hands-on approach are essential. This full-time position is based in Berry, NSW, and is open to Australian Citizens, Permanent Residents, and overseas applicants with suitable skills and English competency.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Head Chef with the daily management of kitchen operations.
  • Lead the kitchen during service, ensuring efficient workflow and consistently high food quality.
  • Prepare and cook dishes that reflect The Berry General Store's seasonal menu and presentation standards.
  • Supervise, train, and support junior chefs and kitchen staff.
  • Ensure recipes, portion control, and plating standards are maintained across every service.
  • Assist with ordering, stock control, and inventory management to minimise waste.
  • Monitor food costs and contribute ideas to improve efficiency and profitability.
  • Receive, check, and correctly store deliveries, ensuring stock rotation and food quality.
  • Maintain exceptional food safety, hygiene, and WHS standards at all times.
  • Work with the Head Chef to develop daily specials, seasonal menu changes, and new dishes.
  • Help create a positive, professional, and respectful team culture.
  • Step into the Head Chef's role during leave or days off, ensuring the kitchen continues to operate to the same standard.

What We're Looking For:
  • Previous Sous Chef experience or a strong Senior Chef ready for the next step.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure.
  • Strong understanding of food costing, stock management, and kitchen systems.
  • Passion for seasonal produce and consistently delivering high-quality food.
  • Ability to mentor and develop junior chefs.
  • Full Australian working rights or eligibility for employer sponsorship.

Salary:
