About the RoleWe are seeking an experienced General Manager – Engineering to lead engineering across Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage (BESS), and Onshore Wind projects.The role is based in Japan and is open to international candidates, with relocation support available for experienced expats.This is a senior leadership position combining technical authority with organizational leadership, responsible for driving engineering excellence, cost efficiency, and performance across utility-scale renewable energy projects, from development through construction and into operations.The role will oversee multiple engineering functions and play a key part in scaling internal capabilities while ensuring successful delivery across a growing project portfolio.
Key Responsibilities Engineering Leadership- Lead and manage multidisciplinary engineering teams across:
- Solar PV
- BESS
- Onshore Wind
- Set engineering strategy, standards, and best practices across all projects
- Oversee system design, specifications, and cost estimates across utility-scale developments
- Guide PV, BESS, and wind system design, ensuring optimal technical and commercial outcomes
- Lead technical reviews for RFQs, EPC contracts, and procurement strategies
Project Delivery- Provide technical oversight from early-stage development through construction and commissioning
- Ensure constructability, technical compliance, and quality across utility-scale projects
- Support project and construction teams in resolving complex engineering issues
- Validate designs and technical solutions during execution phases
Cross-Functional Collaboration- Partner closely with Development, EPC, Construction, and Commercial teams
- Interface with contractors, consultants, utilities, and external stakeholders
- Support technical input into investment decisions, risk assessments, and project planning
Performance & Optimisation- Lead yield estimation, performance modelling, and system optimisation initiatives
- Drive improvements in project performance and reduction in LCOE
- Identify and mitigate technical risks across the project lifecycle
- Establish and continuously improve internal engineering tools, standards, and processes
Organisational Leadership- Build, develop, and scale engineering teams in line with project pipeline growth
- Define team structure, resource planning, and capability development
- Mentor senior engineers and engineering managers
- Foster a high-performance, collaborative engineering culture
Requirements- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or related field
- 12–20+ years of experience across solar, BESS, and/or onshore wind
- Proven experience leading engineering teams at a senior level
- Strong experience delivering utility-scale renewable energy projects
- Strong knowledge of:
- Solar PV system design (DC/AC, layouts, equipment selection)
- BESS system design and integration
- Onshore wind systems and project engineering
- Electrical systems including substations and grid interface
- Experience supporting EPC or EPCm project delivery, including construction and commissioning
- Strong understanding of yield analysis, system optimisation, and performance improvement
- Experience working across full project lifecycle from development through operations
- Ability to manage multiple stakeholders across technical, commercial, and delivery functions
