Nature & Scope
YMCA Camp Elphinstone is seeking enthusiastic individuals for the role of Camper Section Supervisor. In this role, you will oversee a section of up to 160 campers and 34 staff, managing camper care, counsellor development, section-wide programs, and scheduling activities to ensure a seamless and enjoyable camp experience. Camper Section Supervisors are responsible for the safety and well-being of every camper in their section and provide essential support to Camp Counsellors in handling day-to-day camper needs. In addition to supervising and evaluating counsellor performance, they communicate with families when needed. Camper Section Supervisors also coach and mentor Head Camp Counsellors, offering guidance on navigating challenging camper situations, maintaining high program quality, and enhancing the overall camp experience. The Camper Supervisor is a member of the Supervisor team. The Supervisor team collaborates closely with the Summer Camp Manager and Assistant Summer Camp Managers to foster a positive camp culture and prioritize the safety and well-being of all campers. Dedicated to delivering a 5-star experience for campers and their families, Section Supervisors play a key role in the development and facilitation of summer staff training. Supervisors participate in scheduling staff, managing program budgets, driving camp vehicles, and facilitating the success of their section of camp. Major Responsibilities
- in this position, you will:
  • Provide direct supervision to Camp Counsellors in a specific section. Provide leadership and role modelling to all staff.
  • Assist with developing and delivering innovative training that supports professional development of staff & volunteers.
  • Organize, plan, and facilitate all section-specific programs and events.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians in a professional manner.
  • Plan Camp Counsellor and Head Camp Counsellor schedules to ensure strong program delivery and necessary time off.
  • Assist in purchasing supplies and managing the budget for cabin supplies and staff socials.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Supervisor team to support all sections of camp.
  • Support with sign-in and sign-out days.
  • Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all participants and staff
  • Camp staff are expected to contribute to the success of camp by completing tasks in addition to those listed above. These may include, but are not limited to: cleaning, preparing program materials, and transporting and maintaining equipment.

Qualification-you bring:
  • Strong leadership skills, and the ability to foster an inclusive and collaborative culture among staff.
  • Proven ability to solve problems independently.
  • Experience training and mentoring staff.
  • Advanced understanding of behavior management, group facilitation, and risk management.
  • 3 years of experience in camping, youth recreation, and/or outdoor education.
  • Standard First Aid & CPR-C
  • Criminal Reference Check with a Vulnerable Sector Screening issued no later than six (6) months preceding start date.
  • 3 successful reference checks.
  • BC Class 5 Driver’s License.

  • Bronze Cross or Paddle Canada Instructor

About Camp Elphinstone:
YMCA Camp Elphinstone, located near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, is just a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, Vancouver. Nestled on 144 acres of temperate rainforest along the shores of Howe Sound, the camp offers a variety of programs for youth ages 5-17 during July and August. These include one- and two-week overnight camps, Leadership Development programs, multi-day paddling and hiking trips, and day camps. From September to June, Camp Elphinstone functions as an Outdoor Education, Event, and Retreat Centre, hosting schools, conferences, weddings, and other special interest groups. Annually, the camp serves over 10,000 participants. YMCA Camp Elphinstone can accommodate and dine up to 472 campers or guests. During July and August, the camp employs around 140 staff and volunteers, while the spring and fall Outdoor Education seasons see a team of 20-50 members. In the winter season, a smaller core team of 10 staff members is maintained. Successful staff at Camp Elphinstone are self-motivated individuals dedicated to helping children and youth thrive in an outdoor camp setting, and they are committed to providing 5-star customer service to all client groups. We acknowledge that the land where YMCA Camp Elphinstone operates is the traditional, unceded territory of the Skwxwú7mesh-ulh Temíx̱w (Squamish) Nation since time immemorial.
