Job Description

Job Purpose

The Social Responsibility Coordinator will be instrumental in developing and implementing strategies that promote health and wellbeing, social inclusion, community engagement, and environmental sustainability, both within the halls of residence and in the wider university community. Your work will directly support the embedding of the University of Glasgow’s core values into student life, helping to shape a culture of responsibility, collaboration, and positive action.

Collaborating with students, staff, and external partners you will create initiatives that foster an inclusive, supportive, and sustainable environment. Empower students to engage meaningfully with social responsibility issues, both on campus and beyond.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement initiatives to promote social responsibility values in residences, ensuring that they align with the University’s values and objectives.
  • Connect and collaborate with local and global partnerships relating to social and environmental issues, including opportunities for volunteering and educational engagement (e.g., Eco-Hub, GUEST, and SRC Volunteering).
  • Collaborate with the Residence Life and Welfare teams to plan and deliver an annual cycle of educational events, including workshops and talks, that complement the academic year and student needs.
  • Collaborate with the Events and Volunteer Coordinator to support students in developing sustainability initiatives that align with their passions and the values of the University.
  • Identify and develop partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to promote social responsibility and sustainability initiatives.
  • Work with internal university colleagues (such as GUEST and SRC) to communicate sustainability strategies and programs for the student community.
  • Stay informed about university, national, and international sustainability goals, including relevant strategies such as Climate Change, and integrate these into Residence Life education and event programs.
  • Develop workshops and creative resources focused on behavioural challenges in halls of residence, with an emphasis on restorative approaches.
  • Alongside colleagues in International Student Support and External Relations, coordinate responses for students in halls to world events that impact our students living there, ensuring alignment with the University’s stance and offering appropriate support.
  • Assess and evaluate Residence Life activities based on feedback from students and stakeholders, ensuring the diversity of needs and experiences is reflected (e.g., disabilities, neurodivergence, LGBTQ+, care leavers, estranged students).
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of all activities, utilizing feedback for continuous improvement and adapting programs to better serve students.
  • Stay up to date with trends, best practices, and regulatory requirements related to social responsibility and sustainability, providing recommendations for continuous improvement.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential:

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role OR ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills through personal development and progression in a similar role(s).

A2 Awareness of national and international sustainability frameworks and initiatives (e.g., UN Sustainable Development Goals, Climate Change Act, national sustainability strategies).

A3 Knowledge of developing and managing programs or projects focused on social responsibility, sustainability, and community engagement, including the ability to assess their impact and success.

A4 Understanding of the role of young people and/ or higher education in promoting sustainability and social justice, and how to align values with initiatives and actions.

Desirable:

B1 Knowledge of University or Higher Education procedures, such as policies and processes.

Skills 

Essential:

C1 Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and diplomatically to diverse audiences, including senior management, students, and external partners.

C2 Strong analytical skills, with the ability to review complex information, synthesize key insights, and provide actionable recommendations for social responsibility initiatives**.**

C3 Proven project management and organizational skills, with the ability to plan, execute, and evaluate social responsibility (SR) programs and initiatives effectively.

C4 Ability to work independently and take the initiative, proposing innovative solutions and progressing projects while involving senior management as necessary.

C5 Strong attention to detail and accuracy, ensuring all work and reporting is of high quality.

C6 Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues, external partners, and student groups across different levels.

C7 Ability to prioritize effectively and work efficiently under pressure, meeting deadlines and managing a varied workload.

C8 Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the ability to promote these values through SR initiatives and within external partnerships.

C9 Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required, in line with event and project schedules.

C10 Demonstrated ability in problem-solving, planning, and organizing tasks with a clear focus on setting priorities and meeting deadlines.

D1 Ability to supervise staff and volunteers, where appropriate.

Essential:

Experience

E1 Experience in designing and implementing strength based interventions that promote positive outcomes and support social responsibility initiatives.

E2 Proven experience providing support to young people and colleagues on sensitive and complex issues, demonstrating empathy and professionalism.

E3 Experience in the planning, organization, and delivery of face-to-face events, including workshops, with responsibility for managing both small and large-scale events.

E4 Demonstrated ability to make decisions effectively, assessing situations independently and applying good judgment to reach well-informed conclusions.

Desirable:

F1 Experience of developing training programmes.

F2 Experience supervising staff or volunteers, providing guidance and ensuring the smooth delivery of programs or service.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,482 - £37,174 per annum.

This post is open ended and full time working with students in our residences. A high degree of flexibility is required to work evenings and weekends alongside student availability. This role does not support hybrid working.
