Job Summary We have an opportunity to recruit a Resident Doctor (ST1/2) to start as soon as possible in Care of the Elderly. The post is Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm, with an eventual on-call commitment of 1A. Watford General Hospital is a busy General Hospital with a
multidisciplinary team supporting rapid diagnosis and effective treatment. The Department of Medicine for the Elderly has 10 consultant posts and actively engages in orthogeriatric medicine, movement disorders, dementia/depression, and continence care.Main
Duties
- Accountable to the relevant Elderly Care Consultant on the ward.
- Organise and manage day‑to‑day duties of the clinical area, ensuring competent care.
- Collaborate closely with nursing, professional, technical, and administrative staff.
- Maintain adequate clinical notes in accordance with good medical practice.
- Assist in teaching medical students on occasion.

Person Specification Education and Qualifications
- Essential:
Eligible for GMC registration covering the scope of employment; satisfactory completion of FH01 and FH02 (or equivalent evidence) at the time of appointment. - Desirable:
Distinctions, scholarships, prizes; FRCS/MRCP, other degrees (e.g., BSc, Masters, PhD or equivalent).
Knowledge
- Essential:
Keep professional knowledge and skills up to date; fit with career aspirations. - Desirable:
Demonstrate a critical and enquiring approach to knowledge acquisition; understand fundamental professional training processes.
Experience
- Essential:
Competent in basic procedures (e.g., CPR, infection control, physical examination, history taking); able to prioritise clinical need; understand current clinical issues in the specialty; aware of own limitations and know when to ask for help from senior colleagues; understand principles of patient confidentiality, data protection, audit and clinical governance. - Desirable:
Knowledge of UK health systems, relationships between primary and secondary care, inter‑professional relationships; knowledge of current NHS issues; computer literate; participation in clinical audit; understanding of information systems in healthcare.
