Opportunities across Health New Zealand

Emergency Medicine Specialists work in rural, regional and tertiary Emergency Departments (EDs) across Aotearoa (New Zealand). Depending on your location, your role may include:
  • Managing complex and undifferentiated presentations
  • Supervising registrars and junior doctors
  • Point-of-care ultrasound and procedural sedation
  • Supporting trauma, retrieval or helicopter services
  • Contributing to emergency planning and simulation training

You may also be involved in clinical governance, quality improvement or cross-specialty collaboration in your department.

Salary & benefits

Base salary: NZD $170,000 – $250,000+ (based on the ASMS MECA)

Additional compensation: On-call, availability and penal rates where applicable

You'll also receive:
  • Annual Continuing Medical Education (CME) allowance (up to NZD $16,000)
  • CME leave (up to 10 days per year)
  • Six weeks of annual leave per year
  • Twelve public holidays (plus time in lieu if rostered on)
  • Paid parental leave and long service leave entitlements
  • Reimbursement of your MCNZ registration and APC
  • Paid professional indemnity cover

What you need to work here

To practise as an Emergency Medicine Specialist in New Zealand, you must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC).

Most international applicants need a postgraduate qualification equivalent to Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or an approved overseas qualification.
