Salary, Grade 7, £40,497 - £45,413 per annum.


The University of Glasgow is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Celtic Studies (Research & Teaching Track) within the School of Humanities.


This post is full time and fixed term for up to 34 months until 28th July 2028 (with an anticipated start date of 1st September 2025).


The successful candidate will undertake research of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline, and contribute to learning and teaching on Celtic Studies/Celtic Civilisation programmes. The successful applicant will undertake administration and service activities in line with the School and College’s strategic objectives.

Job Purpose


To undertake research of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline, contribute to learning and teaching on Celtic Studies/Celtic Civilisation programmes and undertake administration and service activities in line with the School/College’s strategic objectives.


Main Duties And Responsibilities


  • Develop and progress individual/collaborative research projects of international standard in Celtic Studies with the support of a mentor, as required.
  • Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College, including establishing a track record of high-quality publications.
  • Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses within the Subject Area of Celtic & Gaelic in accordance with the subject’s priorities including accepting responsibilities as course convener for one or more courses.
  • Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
  • Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.
  • Participate fully in examination and other assessment processes, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
  • Supervise individual student projects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate taught level, and contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate research students, as appropriate, to ensure their effective development.
  • Take on administrative or management roles within the Subject Area/School as assigned by the Head of School.
  • Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
  • To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.


Knowledge/ Qualifications


Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience


Essential:


A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in a related discipline and/or teaching experience.


A2 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in Celtic Studies and of teaching methods and techniques to work within the Subject Area.


A3 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.


A4 Developing track record of research outputs compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.


Desirable:


B1 Ability to deliver teaching in the following areas:


At Levels 1 And 2:


  • Celtic Civilisation


At Honours And Postgraduate Taught Levels:


  • Early Gaelic literature
  • Finn Cycle/Fíanaigecht/Fiannaíocht literature
  • Old and Middle Gaelic (Old and Middle Irish) language


B2 Ability to deliver teaching, or to support teaching via second-marking and co-supervision, of topics in Middle Welsh language and literature.


Skills


Essential:


C1 Ability to work on own initiative to contribute to the research and teaching activities within the Subject Area and wider School environment.


C2 Effective organisation skills to manage time and prioritise as appropriate research, teaching and administrative responsibilities.


C3 Knowledge of one or more Celtic languages, medieval and/or modern.


Desirable:


D1 Knowledge of Scottish Gaelic, which, with English, is a working language of the Subject Area.


Experience


Essential:


E1 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.


Desirable:


F1 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.


Terms and Conditions


Salary will be Grade 7, £40,497 - £45,413 per annum.
