Job descriptionThe successful applicant will be responsible for the preparation and baking of desserts and pastries, developing new recipes and seasonal menus, decorating pastries and desserts, managing inventory and stock levels, maintaining kitchen hygiene and safety standards, and performing other duties as directed by management.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and bake desserts and pastries including cakes, cookies, tarts, croissants, and plated desserts, following established recipes and portion controls.
- Develop new recipes and seasonal menus, using creativity to design unique flavours and visually appealing presentations.
- Decorate pastries and desserts to ensure aesthetic appeal and consistency in presentation.
- Manage inventory and stock levels, including ordering ingredients and supplies within budget while monitoring freshness and quality standards.
- Maintain kitchen hygiene and safety standards, ensuring sanitation, proper equipment use, and compliance with health regulations.
- Supervise and train pastry assistants and junior bakers, fostering teamwork and skill development.
- Collaborate with other chefs, including executive or head chefs, to ensure dessert menus complement the overall menu and service flow.
Required Skills and Competencies- Strong culinary expertise in baking techniques, pastry preparation, and ingredient knowledge, including dietary considerations such as gluten-free and vegan options.
- Creativity and artistic presentation skills to craft visually appealing and innovative desserts.
- Excellent attention to detail and precision, ensuring consistency in taste, texture, and presentation.
- Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced kitchen.
- Leadership and mentoring skills to guide and motivate kitchen staff.
- Good communication and reading skills to work effectively within a team and accurately follow recipes.
Qualifications and Experience- Certificate III in Patisserie or post-secondary training in culinary arts, pastry-making, or baking. Relevant qualifications are preferred.
- Minimum of two years' experience in a professional pastry or bakery environment, with hands-on experience in dessert preparation and kitchen operations.
- A portfolio or practical tasting demonstration may be required to showcase skills and creativity.
