Finance Director to guide the agency’s financial operations, steward our resources responsibly, and ensure compliance in our health care billing and reimbursement practices.This is a strategic leadership role that blends fiscal stewardship with mission-driven impact—ideal for a finance professional who understands the unique needs of nonprofit organizations and behavioral health systems.
Position Purpose & OutcomesThe
Finance Director will be responsible for:
- Leading all aspects of financial strategy, planning, reporting, and risk management
- Preparing monthly financial statements, cash flow forecasts, and reporting financial results—including medical billing outcomes to the Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors.
- Managing the annual audit and preparation of 990 filings in collaboration with the external CPA
- Supervising Accounts Payable/Receivable, Payroll and Medical Billing staff including oversight of all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger reconciliation, accounts payable/receivable, payroll processing, bank reconciliation, and budgeting processes
- Ensuring accurate, compliant billing and reporting for Medicaid, private insurance, and government-funded programs, and grants
- Serving as a strategic partner to the Executive Director, Executive Leadership Team, and Board in long-range financial planning
- Supporting and mentoring the finance team with clarity, kindness, and accountability
Position Highlights- Full-time, exempt leadership role
- Reports directly to the Executive Director and collaborates with the Clinical Director, HR, and other teams/departments on fiscal matters as needed
- Plays a key role in sustaining and growing trauma-informed, community-based mental health services

- Health Care Billing Knowledge: You understand the fundamentals of medical billing, including Medicaid and insurance reimbursement in a behavioral health context.
- Collaborative Leadership: You know how to lead through influence, communicate financial concepts clearly, and support others in understanding fiscal impacts.
- Nonprofit Compliance Expertise: You have experience with nonprofit financial regulations, audits, and reporting practices.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- 3+ years of professional experience in nonprofit financial management, including medical billing in a controller or senior accounting role
- 5+ years of supervisory experience
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and QuickBooks accounting software
- Working knowledge of Qualifacts CareLogic or other electronic health records (EHR) is strongly desired.
- Demonstrated experience managing financial audits, budgets, and medical insurance billing processes
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with a solutions-focused mindset
- Strong presentation skills and experience reporting to Board of Directors or Finance Committees
Preferred Qualifications- Prior experience in a community mental health, medical, or social services setting
- Familiarity with EHR systems and integration with billing processes
- Experience working in a mission-driven and equity-focused organization
