Position: Research Associate (Rehabilitation and Reintegration in Europe [RaRiE])
Research Associate (Rehabilitation and Reintegration in Europe [RaRiE]) University of Glasgow – Criminology Department

Contract:

5‑year fixed term, Grade 7 (£41,064 – 46,049 p.a.)

Location:

Glasgow, UK (requires frequent travel between Glasgow, Leiden and Oslo)Job PurposeTo make a leading contribution to the European Research Council‑funded ‘Rehabilitation and Reintegration in Europe’ (RaRiE) project, working with Professor Fergus McNeill (PI), the RaRiE project team and within the Criminology subject area.Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Take a leading role in planning and conducting the RaRiE project, in accordance with deliverables.
  • Document research output, maintain records and databases, draft technical and progress reports and papers.
  • Develop a research profile and reputation, establishing a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality.
  • Survey the literature, develop a suitable research strategy and implement it to deliver project requirements.
  • Present work at conferences, seminars and workshops to enhance research and impact profile.
  • Identify potential funding sources and assist in developing proposals for future funding.
  • Maintain collaborations with colleagues across participating institutions and sectors.
  • Participate in team meetings, seminars and workshops to enhance university knowledge culture.
  • Provide collegial support to postgraduate researchers.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to budgets and expenditure.
  • With Professor McNeill’s agreement, contribute to teaching activities.
  • Stay current with advances in the field.
  • Engage in professional development to enhance specialist and transferable skills.
  • Undertake any other duties as required by Professor McNeill or Head of School.
  • Contribute to the University’s international profile in line with strategy.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Essential Knowledge and Qualifications
  • PhD (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12) or equivalent professional qualification with track record of emerging independence within a research or professional environment.
  • Comprehensive up‑to‑date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the relevant research disciplines.
  • Well‑developed working knowledge of research methods, technical models and techniques relevant to the project.
  • Commitment to open research through open data, open code and open educational resources.

Desirable Knowledge and Qualifications
  • PhD in Criminology or closely related discipline.

Essential Skills
  • Ability to communicate specialist or highly technical material effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Effective organisational skills to manage time, prioritise and deliver research, teaching and administrative responsibilities.

Essential Experience
  • Experience in planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines, applying initiative and independent judgement.
  • Track record of research outputs compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile.
  • Experience in identifying and pursuing research funding applications.
  • Commitment to supporting career development of colleagues and experience of research project supervision.

Terms and ConditionsSalary:
Grade 7, £41,064 – 46,049 per annum. Post is full time, fixed term up to five years, starting January 2026. An eligible candidate may obtain a Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Standard terms of employment apply, including 41 days of annual leave, pension, benefits and discount packages.
