Job Description:
Ready to accelerate your impact in AI safety? Join Constellation's flagship fellowship designed to accelerate AI safety research and develop the next generation of leaders in the field. Astra is a fully funded, 3-6 month, in-person program at Constellation’s Berkeley research center. Fellows advance frontier AI safety projects with guidance from expert mentors and dedicated research management and career support from Constellation’s team. As AI advances faster than any technology in history, the world remains underprepared for its risks. Astra helps close this critical gap by bringing exceptional talent into AI safety and connecting them with leading mentors and research opportunities. Learn more about the Astra Fellowship here.
Over 80% of our first cohort transitioned to full-time roles at top AI safety organizations including Redwood Research, METR, Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepMind, and the US and UK AI Safety Institutes.
Fellows can apply to work on research projects spanning Empirical AI Safety Research, Technical AI Policy & Governance Research, AI Strategy & Conceptual research, AI Security Engineering and Research, and building infrastructure to support and grow the AI Safety field.
What We Provide
Financial Support
  • Competitive stipend for full program duration
  • Research budget of ~$15K per fellow per month for compute resources

Research Environment
  • Prime workspace at Constellation's research center in Berkeley, CA
  • Community access to ~150 network participants 
  • Regular programming including shared meals, seminars, workshops, and conferences


Mentorship & Support
  • Regular mentorship from senior AI safety experts
  • Research management support via 1:1s, small groups, and office hours
  • Career services including placement assistance across our network
  • Incubation services for fellows launching new organizations (business operations, communication, hiring, fundraising support)


Ideal Candidates
We’re looking for talented people that are excited to pursue new ideas and projects that advance safe AI. 
You may be a strong fit if you:
  • Are motivated to reduce catastrophic risks from advanced AI
  • Bring technical or domain-specific experience relevant to the focus areas (e.g., technical research, security, governance, policy, strategy, field-building) 
  • Would like to transition into a full-time AI safety role or start your own AI safety focused organization


Prior AI safety experience is not required. Many of our most impactful fellows entered from adjacent fields and quickly made significant contributions. If this fellowship speaks to you but you’re unsure whether you qualify, we encourage you to apply.
