About Us
This vacancy sits within the Institute for Sustainable Resources (ISR) within the Bartlett School of Environment, Energy, and Resources in the newly created Centre for Net Zero Market Design. The UCL Centre for Net Zero Market Design provides independent, evidence-based analysis to inform policies for a rapidly decarbonising UK energy system, with stakeholder engagement to support delivery of an investible market and efficient operation for business and consumers.
About The Role
The successful candidate will work with Dr. Malte Jansen and the team from the Centre for Net Zero Market Design to advance high quality and policy-relevant research, with activities including:
- Conduct detailed quantitative analysis of household energy consumption data from the Smart Energy Research Lab (SERL), developing a model that allows users to test the impacts of net-zero policies on diverse UK households.
- Use clustering analysis and other statistical techniques to create new consumer archetypes that highlight household vulnerabilities and resilience in the face of net-zero policies.
- Integrate additional data sources, including socio-demographic information from national surveys, to provide a holistic view of household-level impacts.
- Simulate the effects of policy scenarios (e.g., shifts from standing charges to alternative pricing mechanisms) on different archetypes, analysing implications for energy affordability, welfare, and income distribution.
- Contribute to the preparation of policy briefings, academic publications, and public-facing reports.
- Present findings in academic and policy settings, including stakeholder workshops and webinars, supporting NEF’s engagement efforts with policymakers, civil society, and the energy industry.
- Collaborate closely with project team members, including a project advisory board, to ensure the integrated model aligns with the project’s policy impact goals.
Engagement and networking activities: Actively contribute and engage with the BSEER community, participating in in-person and virtual events such as the Sustainable Higher Education Initiative, ISR in Conversations, and ISR seminar series, among others
Management and citizenship roles: Attend relevant academic and coordination meetings Commit to advancing equality, diversity, and inclusivity for staff and students.
This post has funding until the 30 November 2026 in the first instance; further funding to support the post may become available.

About You
The ideal candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent experience in a quantitative field relevant to the research focus, such as economics, data science, energy policy, environmental sustainability, or a closely related discipline. They will also hold specialised knowledge or research experience in one or more of the following: energy systems, distributional impacts of policies, socio-economic modelling, or quantitative policy evaluation. Research with direct implications for public policy is preferred, particularly in areas related to energy, social equity, or environmental transitions, but not required.
